5 Tips to Get Great Results When Painting Cornicing

Painting in Dublin

Cornicing adds a touch of elegance to any room, but getting a perfect paint finish can be tricky. Whether you’re refreshing existing cornicing or painting new plaster, attention to detail is key. Here are five expert tips to help you achieve a flawless result when painting cornicing.

1. Prepare the Surface Properly
Preparation is essential for a smooth, long-lasting finish. If the cornicing is new, ensure it’s fully dry before painting. For older cornicing, clean away dust and cobwebs, and remove any loose or flaking paint. If there are cracks or imperfections, fill them with a suitable filler and sand lightly for a smooth surface.

2. Use the Right Tools
A good-quality brush is essential for painting cornicing, as it allows for precision around intricate details. A small angled brush works well for cutting in, while a fine bristle brush helps to get into decorative grooves without overloading them with paint. However, for the best and most efficient results, spray painting is the most effective method. It provides even coverage, reaches detailed areas with ease, and ensures a smooth, professional finish.

3. Apply a Suitable Primer
If you’re painting bare plaster or new coving, a mist coat (a diluted emulsion) or a high-quality primer is needed to help the paint adhere properly. For previously painted surfaces, an adhesion primer may be required, especially if switching from an oil-based to a water-based paint.

4. Choose the Right Paint
For a professional finish, use a durable, high-opacity paint designed for ceilings. A matt finish works well on cornicing, as it reduces glare and enhances detail. If using water-based paint over old oil-based paint, ensure proper preparation and priming to prevent peeling.

5. Take Your Time with Application
Start by cutting in carefully along the edges before painting the main surface. If using a brush, work in light, even coats to avoid drips and brush marks. However, spray painting is the most effective application method for cornicing, as it creates a seamless finish with no visible brush strokes. If painting near a wall or ceiling of a different color, use painter’s tape for sharp, clean edges. Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next for the best results.

By following these five tips, you can achieve a beautifully painted cornice that enhances the overall look of your room. If you’d rather leave it to the professionals, get in touch – we’d be happy to help!
